Dame Margaret Karika was regarded a true leader and was a woman who was well respected by the nation as a whole. Her reign as the Queen makes her the longest serving Ariki in the Cook Islands.
Dame Margaret succeeded her father, Makea Karika Pa George Ariki, to the title on May 14, 1949 after his death. Dame Margaret was an inaugural member of the House of Ariki as well as being a member of many community organisations. As a traditional leader she was conferred the title of Dame in the 2012 Queen’s New Year Honours.
Dame Margaret passed away on September 22, 2017. She was 98.
