Nine teams confirmed for Te Maeva Nui NZ 2021

Since its inception in 2019, Te Maeva Nui NZ has been a focal point for Cook Islanders all across New Zealand, and the Cook Islands. With a format that focusses on telling the stories of the Cook Islands people, rather than competition, Te Maeva Nui NZ has grown to become a grand theatrical production – featuring our people.

This year, 2021, we welcome Cook Islanders from outside of Auckland for the first time. We are proud to announce that 9 teams will be participating in Te Maeva Nui NZ 2021.

Introducing our teams:

  • Vaka Takitumu
  • Vaka Puaikura
  • Vaka Te Au o Tonga
  • Mangaia A’uau Enua
  • Aitutaki Enua
  • Oire Poneke (Wellington)
  • Oire Tokoroa
  • Tongareva Henua
  • Te Ulu o te Watu

We are proud to be working with these teams to create the biggest Cook Islands cultural festival in New Zealand; giving them a platform to tell their stories. This year, Te Maeva Nui NZ will explore themes of resilience. From the journeys across the Pacific, to the COVID pandemic, these stories will be told with a combination of song, dance and theatre across five different performance categories.

Te Maeva Nui NZ will be held at the Barfoot & Thompson Stadium in Kohimarama on the 23 & 24 July 2021. Tickets will be available from Ticketmaster.
